Although he has written poetry and novels, he was best known for his 'Sex' books.
He smoked.

In the books' illustrations, he used a man with a less-than-perfect body and an ordinary-looking woman with hairy armpits.
He promoted sex as a leisure activity comparing it to tennis.
His books continue to sell.
'Joy of Sex' sold more than 12 million copies and was published in many different languages.
