It was the first city to have a nuclear weapon dropped on it (August 6, 1945).
The results: 70% of the city's buildings were destroyed and 70,000 people were immediately killed.
The death toll nearly doubled by the end of the year as people succumbed to their injuries and/or radiation poisoning.
Survivors of the bombing and their children were often discriminated against out of the mistaken belief that radiation sickness could be transmitted from person to person.
It has hot and humid summers.
