Why he might be annoying:

He lived in the shadow of his famous father.
He's the only immediate member of the Lincoln family not buried in Springfield.
While in the Army, he was put on General Grant's staff to ensure he didn't see actual fighting.
He put his mother in a mental institution, an act that she never forgave him of.
He turned down President Hayes' offer to make him Assistant Secretary of State.
He was urged by Republican leaders many times to run for president, but never did.
He was invited to events by three different assassinated presidents prior to their deaths, earning him a reputation of being jinxed.
He was Lincoln's only son to live into the 20th century.

Why he might not be annoying:

He studied at Harvard Law School.
He joined the Union Army when he could have used his prestige to avoid service (1865).
He was the only Lincoln child to survive into adulthood.
His son died of blood poisoning (1890).
He appeared at the dedication of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington (1922).
He was once rescued from falling onto a moving train by Edwin Booth, brother of the man who had shot his father.
