Politician

The Resume

Why he might be annoying:

He was married four times, divorced three times.
Treasury Secretary Henry Morgenthau threatened to resign from the cabinet unless FDR forced James to sever his ties with the National Grain Yeast Corp., a company suspected of being a front for bootlegging (1935).
He was accused of using his position as his father's secretary to steer business to the insurance firm he was a partner in (1938).
He ran unsuccessfully for governor of California (1950) and mayor of Los Angeles (1965).
He was an executive in Robert Vesco's Investors Overseas Service, which resulted in federal charges and a Swiss arrest warrant being issued for him. (The charges were dismissed by the SEC after he signed a pledge to not violate security laws [1973].)
He was criticized by fellow Democrats for endorsing the presidential campaigns of Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was a Marine Corps officer during World War II and received the Navy Cross.
He was one the earliest politicians to speak out against Joseph McCarthy.
He voted against funding the House Unamerican Activities Committee.
He said his proudest legislative achievement was securing a provision in the 1964 Civil Rights Act mandating fair employment practices.
During the divorce proceedings against his third wife, Gladys Irene Owens, she stabbed him eight times with his Marine combat knife (1969).
He said, 'There are some liberals who won't recognize one's right to some independent thought. That's the opposite of the liberal point of view.'
