The Resume

    (September 12, 1924-January 20, 1973)
    Born in Bafata, Guinea-Bissau
    Agricultural engineer and anti-colonial revolutionary
Founded the PAIGC (African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde; 1956)
Assassinated by rival members of the PAIGC, possibly with Portuguese support
Known as 'the Che Guevara of Africa'

Why he might be annoying:

    He was a Marxist.
He spied for the Soviet bloc as an agent for Czechoslovak State Security.
After his assassination, over a hundred PAIGC officers and soldiers were accused of involvement and summarily executed.

Why he might not be annoying:

He used his agricultural background to instruct PAIGC soldiers in improved farming techniques that they in turn taught to local farmers, increasing production enough that the soldiers could be supported on the excess.
He set up a system of trade and barter bazaars in the countryside of Guinea-Bissau that made staple goods available at lower prices than in the official colonial stores.
He led a 7,000-man force against a 42,000 strong Portuguese army and liberated two-thirds of Guinea-Bissau in a conflict dubbed 'Portugal's Vietnam.'
The guerilla war he led resulted not just in independence for Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde, but also in the collapse of the fascist dictatorship in Portugal.
The 'Times' of London called him 'one of the most extraordinary leaders and thinker of modern Africa.'
