Knighted in 1907

Why he might be annoying:

He was a severe, serious person.
He tried to be a lawyer, but was a failure.
His lyrics are exceedingly verbose, using unusual words like 'quiddity,' 'ablutioner,' 'emollient,' 'selvagee' and 'emeutes.'
Some accuse 'The Mikado' of being a racist work.

Why he might not be annoying:

He is thought of as the first modern stage director.
He died at seventy-four trying to save a woman from drowning.
He continued to work with composer Arthur Sullivan, even though he disliked him.
The Gilbert and Sullivan operas have a huge cult following.
His librettos are witty and satirical.
