He ‘found’ Jesus Christ.
He retired in 2002 but came back in the 2003-2004 season.
He was a heavy drinker, which led to him needing a liver transplant in 2004.

Why he might not be annoying:

He put up with John Madden’s incessant blabbering for 21 years (which may explain the drinking).
He was one of the NFL’s best announcers long before Madden, but he’s generally overlooked between the two.
He eventually shook off his drinking habit.
He won an astonishing amount of broadcasting awards over the years and called 16 Superbowl games on television and 10 on the radio.
