    Officially called Santiago de Guayaquil
    Named after a native chief called Guayas and his wife Quil, who chose to die rather than surrender to conquistadors
    Founded by conquistador Francisco de Orellana
    Site of a battle between the forces of the Ecuadorian provisional government and the Supreme Leadership of Guayas, which ended the Ecuadorian civil war (September 22-24, 1860)

Why Guayaquil, Ecuador might be annoying:

    It is rivals with Ecuador's capital city and cultural center Quito, whose people often view Guayaquil's people like scoundrels.
    It was attacked and looted by English and French pirates who took local women as concubines. (1687)
    It was looted by English privateers Woodes Rogers, Etienne Courtney, and William Dampier, though they didn't get to collect ransom due to an outbreak of yellow fever. (1709)
    It was occupied by the Peruvian army for seven months. (January 19-July 21, 1829)
    Large parts of the city were destroyed by a fire. (1896)
    It witnesses heavy rainfall from January to April, intensifying into floods during El Niño years.

Why Guayaquil, Ecuador might not be annoying:

    It is nicknamed the Pearl of the Pacific.
    Its people managed to overwhelm royalist forces and gain their independence with almost no bloodshed. (October 9, 1820)
    It was the site of a conference where Simón Bolívar and José de San Martín discussed the independence plans for South American nations. (July 26, 1822)
    It is Ecuador's economic powerhouse owing to its strategic location on the Pacific coast.
    All flights to the Galápagos Islands start in or stop at the city.
    It is a melting pot of various peoples from other places, both within Ecuador and abroad.
