The Resume

    (November 6, 1932-December 4, 2021)
Born in Tabor City, North Carolina
Birth name actually is Stonewall Jackson
Recorded the singles 'Waterloo' (1959), 'Why I'm Walkin'' (1960), 'A Wound Time Can't Erase' (1962), 'B.J. the D.J.' (1964), 'Don't Be Angry' (1964), 'I Washed My Hands in Muddy Water' (1965), 'Stamp Out Loneliness' (1967) and 'Me and You and a Dog Named Boo' (1971)

Why he might be annoying:

He falsely claimed to be a direct descendent of the Confederate general.
Before his recording career took off, he worked in the Grand Ole Opry's mailroom, sending out Opry souvenir books.
He was a one-hit wonder on the pop chart, with 'Waterloo' his only crossover success.
Does it seem wrong to anyone else for a guy named after a Civil War general to land his biggest hit with a song named after a battle from the Napoleonic Wars?

Why he might not be annoying:

After his debut performance at the Grand Ole Opry, the audience called him back for four encores (1956).
His first charting single, 'Life to Go,' was written by George Jones (1959).
He sued the Opry for age discrimination, claiming he was being sidelined in favor of younger performers and that Opry general manager Peter Fisher had said he did not want 'any gray hairs on that stage or in the audience, and before I'm done, there won't be any.'
He returned to performing at the Opry after settling the suit for an undisclosed amount (2008).
