Murderer (Alleged)

The Resume

    (September 14, 1884-May 14, 1965)
    Lived in Chicago, Illinois
Charged with killing Walter Law (March 1924)
Acquitted of the charge (June 1924)
Inspiration for 'Velma Kelly' in the musical and film 'Chicago'

Why she might be annoying:

Her married younger lover, Walter Law, was discovered shot to death in her car with a bottle of gin and a gun (March 12, 1924).
When the police tracked her down, bloody clothes were found in her apartment.
She claimed to have no memory of what happened because she was too drunk.
Reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins made the crime a media sensation, which may have led to the 'not guilty' verdict.
    She was divorced.
She remarried her second husband after the trial.
She was convicted of drunk driving (1926).

Why she might not be annoying:

She was described as the 'most stylish' prisoner on Murderess Row.
She was acquitted by an all-male jury.
She admitted, 'Gin and guns; either one is bad enough, but together they get you in a dickens of mess, don't they.'
