The Resume

    (July 26, 1915-May 18, 2009)
    Resides in Mysore, India
Guru was Sri Tirumali Krishnamacharya, who is a major influence on modern-day yoga
Helped Krishnamacharya form Ashtanga yoga into six series from various ancient texts; each Ashtanga yoga series has a set sequence of poses, and the practice focuses on syncing breath with movement
Professor of the yoga department at Sanskrit College in Mysore (1937-1973)
Co-owns the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute in Mysore with his grandson, Sharath
Father was an astrologer and a Brahmin priest
He was married to Savitramma, who came from a long line from Sanskrit scholars
    Authored the book, 'Yoga Mala'
Is the subject of the documentary, 'Ashtanga, NY' (2003)

Why he might be annoying:

When teaching, he will yell out 'bad man' or 'bad woman' if a student doesn't follow his exact directions.
His daughter, Saraswati, does all of his cleaning and cooking.
In his old age, he stopped doing yoga.
Despite his diabetic condition, he ignores doctor's orders and still eats sweets.
Due to recent endorsements from Sting, Madonna and Gwenneth Paltrow among others, Ashtanga yoga has been trendy to practice.

Why he might not be annoying:

He has been practicing yoga since he was 12.
He had lived in poverty for two years after he left home to attend Sanskrit College.
His guru was a strict disciplinarian who would beat Jois with a cane when he didn't follow directions.
He and Savitramma had a 'love' marriage (as opposed to a traditionally arranged one), and were together until her death in 1997.
He continues to practice Prananayama, a controlled breathing method, which is said to be a 'destroyer of all diseases.'
He is nearly 90 and still has the strength and energy to teach classes at his center in Mysore and around the world.
Saraswati and Sharath are both accomplished yogis who assist Jois in many of his classes.
When he had to get cataract surgery, Jois scheduled different appointments for each eye, so he didn't have to miss teaching his regularly scheduled classes.
