He was a very popular character actor in the 1950's, 1960's and 1970's.
He acted in three movies that are considered American masterpieces: 'The Hustler,' 'The Graduate' and 'Jaws.'
The screenwriter for 'Jaws,' Carl Gottlieb, said nobody was better at 'portraying weakness disguised as strength.'
Fans of the movie love his performance as the arrogant mayor of Amity.
