Why he might be annoying:

He liked to party and was usually forgiven for speeding around Cape Caniveral in his Corvette.
He was strapped in, lying on his back, and after many delays told mission control he had to urinate.
They told him to do it in his suit, and he did, the urine travelled to his back and he was left wet and very uncomfortable.
He inadvertently left the gray filter on his window and only got a black and white view of the Earth.

Why he might not be annoying:

He is the first American to go into space aboard Freedom 7 (April 15, 1961).
He snuck a golf club aboard Apollo 14 and hit two golf balls on the Moon.
His wife died a month after him (1998).
He was the fifth person to walk on the Moon and the oldest, 47.
He help found the 'Mercury Seven Foundation' to raise money for scholarships for science and engineering students (1984).
He summed up his American heroic status with 'During the actual process of flying spacecraft, or flying the Spirit of St. Louis, one doesn't think of one's self as being a hero or historical figure.
One does it because the challenge is there, and one feels reasonably qualified to accomplish it.
And it's later on, I suppose, perhaps at the suggestion of other people, that you say, Well, yes, maybe. I must admit, maybe I am a piece of history after all.'
