    He sported giant fluffy hair his whole career.
    He often grows a big beard or a goatee.
    He dyed his goatee purple at age 60.
    He recorded with Gerry Rafferty in the Humblebums in the late 60s.
    He divorced his wife of 16 years (1985) and remarried 4 years later (to Pamela Stephenson - 1989).
    He swears excessively in his stand-up acts, so much so it has become his trademark.
    He tells extremely long stories during interviews and his stand-up acts.
    He plays the banjo.
    His humor went awry and angered the audience, over remarks he made concerning British hostage Ken Bigley who was being held in Iraq and threatened with beheading. He said: 'Perhaps I shouldn't be saying this ... aren't you the same as me, don't you wish they would just get on with it ?' (October 6, 2004).

    He has been one of the UK's top comedians since the early 70s.
    His success in stand-up comedy and box-office takings in Australia is immeasurable.
    Despite the fact that his stories are quite long, he is well known for his ability to captivate his audience the whole time no matter what the topic.
    He managed to carve himself an impressive acting career in multiple genres.
    Although he started off as a comedic actor, his dramatic role in 'Mrs Brown' earned him BAFTA, Golden Satellite and Screen Actors Guild nominations.
    He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Letters at a ceremony in the University of Glasgow (2001).
    He was appointed CBE in the 2003 Queen's Birthday Honors List.
