The Resume

    (May 16, 1916-October 14, 1997)
Born in New York City, New York
    Birth name is Harold Rubin
Wrote ‘The Dream Merchants’ (1949), ’79 Park Avenue’ (1955), ‘The Carpetbaggers’ (1961), ‘The Lonely Lady’ (1976), ‘Descent from Xanadu’ (1984) and ‘Tycoon’ (1997)
    Studio executive for Universal Pictures

Why he might be annoying:

He falsely claimed he was brought up in an orphanage.
He also lied about his first wife being killed by a diseased parrot.
His books are better known for their explicit sex and profanity than their literary qualities.
Many of his characters are barely disguised real people such as Howard Hughes.
He described Ernest Hemingway as a ‘jerk.’
He bought his second wife 14 carat gold fingernails.
He hosted orgies and drug parties at his Hollywood mansion.

Why he might not be annoying:

He made a million dollars by age 20 selling sugar (but soon lost it).
He wrote his first book after a bet he could churn out something better than typical Hollywood schlock.
He locked himself in hotel rooms with no room service to force himself to write.
Hip trouble left him confined to a wheelchair at age 66.
His divorces depleted much of his fortune.
He said, ‘When I’m gone, they can grill me and throw the ashes where they please, say what they like.’
