The Resume

    (October 23, 1920-November 19, 1998)
    Born in Kitakyushu, Japan

Earned a B.S. in mechanical engineering from the Meiji College of Technology (1943)
Earned a doctoral degree from Tokyo University (1953)
Severe storms researcher invented the Fujita scale (1971) that measures the intensity of tornadoes
Died in Chicago at age 78

Why he might be annoying:

    His nickname was Mr. Tornado.
He dumped his Japanese colleagues when he got his doctorate to study at the University of Chicago.
He didn't see a tornado in person until 1982.

Why he might not be annoying:

Knowing tornadoes were common in the U.S., he became a naturalized U.S. citizen (1968).
His work on microbursts (he coined the word 'downburst') and development of Doppler radar near airports greatly reduced airline crashes caused by wind shears.
Showing no hard feelings Japan, awarded him Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold and Silver Star for his tornado work (1991) and the Transportation Cultural Award for his contributions to air safety (1992).
The Fujita scale is now used by meteorologists worldwide.
