Why he might be annoying:

He wore loud plaid pants in the 70's.
He was the general manager and head coach of his hometown Philadelphia 76ers, but his championship came at their expense.
In his second season with Portland, the Blazers came out of the gate 50-10 until Bill Walton broke his foot. They were never the same and he did not win another title.
For a time, he resembled Stan on the Golden Girls.

Why he might not be annoying:

For an octogenarian, he was in phenomenal shape.
His colleagues at ESPN, who are used to being around world class athletes, marvel at his physical condition.
He has a masters and doctorate in education from Penn, and has written several books.
He was a heavy underdog against the 76ers when he won the NBA championship.
He gives a very even version of a story.
He predicted Pat Riley would return to coach the Heat.
He is one of the most respected voices in basketball.
