Why he might be annoying:

He left Dale Earnhardt's team after the 1992 season to start his own driving career.
He competed in Nascar in 2002-2005 in outdated equipment and on a small budget.
He failed to finish every Nascar race he competed in during that stretch.
Most of his races during that time were races where he just started to collect prize money awarded for starting the race.
If he didn't do well in the 2006 Daytona 500, he would have had to sell much of his racing equipment including a couple of his race cars.

Why he might not be annoying:

At the age of 28, he was the youngest crew chief to win a Nascar Championship.
He finished a career best 20th in the 2006 Daytona 500 in an outdated car.
A group of Dale Earnhardt fans put the money together for him to have enough tires to compete in the Daytona 500.
He borrowed a pit crew from another team that competed that weekend for the 2006 Daytona 500.
His story was one of the feel-good stories of the 2006 Daytona 500.
