He had a reputation as a heavy drinker and a ladies' man.
He married a 15 year old when he was 33.
He was a lawyer.
He shot dead Philip Barton Key for having an affair with his wife.
He was the first person in U.S history to be acquitted of murder using the insanity defence.
He disobeyed orders at Gettysburg and took his men into unnecessary combat.
He was accused of stealing funds from and forced to step down as Chairman of the New York State Monuments Commission.
He was rumored to have had an affair with the deposed Queen Isabella II of Spain.

Why he might not be annoying:

He forgave his wife for cheating on him.
He raised Union volunteers when the Civil War broke out.
He lost a leg to cannon fire at Gettysburg, but continued to raise his soldiers' spirits by grinning and puffing on his cigar as he was carried from the battle field.
He donated his amputated leg to the Army Medical Museum in Washington.
He was awarded the Medal of Honour for his actions at Gettysburg.
