Upon arriving in New Orleans, he demanded all National Guard troops point their guns down, away from stranded citizens.
New Orleans mayor Ray Nagin described him as 'a John Wayne dude' who 'can get some stuff done.'
He personally helped a young mother of twins get the dehydrated and hungry babies evacuated to a Coast Guard ship for treatment.
His daughter and other relatives reside in the storm-ravaged city and he had yet to hear from them.
