Why he might be annoying:

He refused to play in an exhibition game in 1883 at Toledo of the American Association because Toledo had a black catcher on its roster.
He established baseball's color line, which banned African Americans from playing until 1947.
He selected an All Time Greatest Team in 1918, and left Ty Cobb off it.
There is a controversy as to whether he was the first player to have 3,000 hits, he played during an era where statistics were not well compiled.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was the greatest player of nineteenth century baseball.
He thought only catchers should be allowed to wear gloves.
After he left the Chicago club, they adopted the name 'Orphans' in his honor.
He stole 253 bases out of 253 attempts.
