    Born in Budapest, Hungary
    Birth name was Arnold Guttmann
    Won gold medals in the 100-meter freestyle and 1200-meter freestyle at the first modern Olympics (1896)
    Named to the International Swimming Hall of Fame (1966) and International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame (1981)

Why he might be annoying:

    He adopted a Hungarian name for competitions.
    He had difficulty getting time off from college to attend the Olympics.
    Asked by the Crown Prince of Greece where he learned to swim so well, he replied, 'In the water.'

Why he might not be annoying:

    At 13, he took up swimming after his father drowned in the Danube River.
    He was the youngest gold medalist at the first Olympics.
    He was a versatile athlete who won Hungarian titles in the 100-meter sprint, 400-meter hurdles and discus and played on three national championship soccer teams (1901-03).
    He became a sports architect and designed a swimming complex in Budapest that now bears his name.
