    Poet Laureate (1807-43)

Why he might be annoying:

    When Charlotte Bronte wrote to him for advice, he admonished her, ‘Literature cannot be the business of a woman’s life and it ought not be.’
    He blamed the Peterloo Massacre (in which British cavalry charged into an unarmed crowd of demonstrators, killing eleven) on the ‘revolutionary rabble.’
    He said writers who attacked the government should be deported to penal colonies.
    Lord Byron mocked him in his ‘The Vision of Judgment.’

Why he might not be annoying:

    He was expelled from Westminster School for writing a magazine article condemning flogging.
    He wrote ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears.’
    Byron wrote, ‘Southey’s prose is perfect.’
