He formed a comedy act with his wife in 1914, but divorced her in 1927 because he wanted to do Broadway.
He appeared in over 150 films but is best known by the world as Fred Mertz.
Both he and co-star Vivian Vance had nothing but contempt for each other during the series run of 'I Love Lucy.'
Why he might not be annoying
He hated rehearsals, so he rarely showed up for them, yet almost never flubbed a line.
As a boy he sang at St. Pauls' Catholic Church and played at the Burlington Opera House in Burlington Iowa.
He was a vaudevillian in the heyday of vaudeville.
He collapsed of a heart attack while walking along Hollywood Boulevard after seeing a movie.
