The Resume
(December 10, 1934-December 14, 1985)
Raised in North Dakota
Played for the Kansas City A's, New York Yankees and St. Louis Cardinals
Broke the home run record with 61 (1961)
A.L. MVP (1960, 61)
'61*' was a movie of Maris' home run streak
Why he might be annoying
He began losing his hair from stress when he was closing in on the home run record.
Like Rodney Dangerfield, he gets no respect
He is still not in the hall of fame, and the Yankees did not retire his number '9' until Graig Nettles wore it after him.
The record books showed an asterisk next to his home run record, because Babe Ruth broke the record in a 154 game season, Maris did it in a 162 game season.
Why he might not be annoying
He broke Babe Ruth's 34 year old home run record in 1961.
His record stood 37 years, until Mark McGwire hit 70 (1998).
He still holds the A.L. home run record.
He played in 7 World Series in just a 12 year career.
Besides being a home run hitter, he was one of the best right fielders in baseball history.
