    Born in Paris, France

Why he might be annoying:

He bitterly rejected being included among the Impressionists.
He mocked landscape artists for working outdoors.
He believed an artist could have no social life and became increasingly isolated.
During the Dreyfus Affair, he broke off relations with all his Jewish friends.

Why he might not be annoying:

His father had changed the family name to the more aristocratic 'De Gas,' but he changed it back to the original 'Degas.'
He organized the first Impressionist exhibition.
He suffered failing eyesight in his later years.
Shortly before his death he told his friend, engraver Jean-Louis Forain, that if there had to be a eulogy at his funeral, 'You get up and say, 'He greatly loved drawing. So do I.' Then go home.'
