The Resume

    (July 20, 1844-January 31, 1900)
Birth name was John Sholto Douglas
    Ninth Marquess of Queensberry
    Other titles include Viscount Drumlanrig
    Father of Lord Alfred Douglas
Popularizer of the Marquis of Queensberry rules for boxing

Why he might be annoying:

    He may have been insane.
He beat his wife and children.
He attacked the Prime Minister of Great Britain with a whip.
He hated that his son had a gay relationship with Oscar Wilde.
He called Wilde a ‘Sodomite’ in public and sent him a bouquet of rotten vegetables.
The scene led to a court case after which Wilde went to prison for homosexuality.
In his accusation, he misspelled sodomite as 'somdomite.'
After the libel suit was withdrawn, he was the main force behind having Wilde prosecuted for committing acts of 'gross indecency.'
After Wilde's conviction, Queensberry pursued further revenge, suing Wilde for the defense costs he had incurred in the libel trial. He eventually forced Wilde into bankruptcy.
On his deathbed, he spit in the face of his son Percy when Percy expressed sympathy for Wilde.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He became impotent.
He was born with deformed genitals.
    He loved boxing.
He established the first boxing code of conduct, the ‘Marquess of Queensberry Rules,’ which are still used today.
He had to watch his young son have a public affair with a fat, middle-aged man.
He was a founder of the Amateur Athletic Association of England, one of the first groups that did not require amateur athletes to be members of the upper class to compete.
He was prevented from taking his seat in the House of Lords when he refused to take a religious oath to the Queen.
In his will, he ordered that there be 'no Christian mummeries or tomfooleries over my grave.'
