Murdered in Chile
Subject of the 1978 book 'The Execution of Charles Horman: An American Sacrifice' and the 1982 film 'Missing'
Why he might be annoying
While working freelance in Chile, he was given sensitive information on the role the U.S. played in putting Augusto Pinochet in power.
Because he 'knew too much,' his name was put on a death list drawn up with the help of CIA operatives.
On September 17, 1973, he was seized by Chilean troops and executed a few days later at the National Stadium.
His corpse was found in a morgue a month later.
Why he might not be annoying
For two weeks after his disappearance, his wife and father enlisted the help of American officials in Chile, who proved uncooperative.
Based on a 1976 State Department memo, the American government may have allowed one of its citizens to be killed by a foreign government simply because he was 'bothersome.'
His family received government documents with the CIA's 'unfortunate part' redacted (1980).
President Clinton allowed the release of over 1000 documents admitting the role American intelligence played in his execution (1999).
