    Outfielder and third baseman for the Dallas Green Monarchs (1941), Kansas City Monarchs (1941,1946,1948), St. Louis Browns (1947) and New York Giants (1949-56)

Why he might be annoying:

    At age eleven, he was caught stealing jewelry from a car and was sent to reform school.
    He fatally shot Buddy Crow and arrived at spring training a day later: ‘I killed a man, and the next day I was playing ball like nothing had happened.’
    He earned a quarter of a million dollars in the Majors, and spent it all on cars, booze and women.
    He was arrested for car theft (1957).
    He held up a bar for $37, was charged with armed robbery, and sentenced to probation (1961).
    He robbed $270 from a liquor store and spent six years in jail (1963-69).

Why he might not be annoying:

    His father beat him.
    He fought in the Battle of the Bulge during World War II.
    His shooting of Buddy Crow was ruled self-defense since Crow had threatened Thompson, then advanced on him with a knife.
    He was the only player to break the color barrier for two Major League teams.
    He was the first black player to play in both the American and National Leagues.
    He joined Alcoholics Anonymous while in prison.
    He suffered a fatal stroke a few days after being released on parole.
