Why he might be annoying
He claimed that Hitler was unaware of the Holocaust.
He said, ‘There were no gas chambers at Auschwitz.'
He asked, ‘Given the ruthless efficiency of the Germans, if there was an extermination program to kill all the Jews, how come so many survived?'
He suggested that parts of ‘The Diary of Anne Frank' had been forged by her father.
He said that Churchill had ‘sold out the British Empire' to the interests of ‘international Jewry.'
He called the Holocaust a ‘big lie' and ‘propaganda story' used to cover up an international Jewish conspiracy.
He sued historian Deborah Lipstadt for libel for calling him a Holocaust denier and lost, with the judge declaring it was ‘incontrovertible that Irving qualifies as a Holocaust denier.' (1998).
His Holocaust denial resulted in his being banned from Austria, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Canada.
Why he might not be annoying
He described Himmler as a ‘Nazi gangster.'
The judge in the libel trial wrote that when he sticks to military history, ‘Irving has much to commend him.'
When he was sentenced to prison, Lipstadt said, ‘I am not happy when censorship wins…. The way of fighting Holocaust deniers is with history and truth.'
