Why he might be annoying:

He has undergone therapy for bulimia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, bipolar disorder and alcoholism.
As a youth, he shoplifted for excitement.
After an argument with fellow players on the Newcastle United youth team, he drove the groundskeeper's tractor into the dressing room wall.
He and drinking buddy 'Five Bellies' Gardner ran over a man, fled the scene, then wrecked the car to claim it was stolen, before confessing to their crime.
After failing to make the 1998 World Cup squad because of injuries and discipline problems, he trashed manager Glenn Hoddle's hotel room.
He was arrested twice for assaulting photographers (2005-06).
He was dropped from the show 'I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here' before filming began when he failed a psychiatric test (2009).
He repeatedly beat wife Sheryl Kyle, once leaving her with cuts and bruises on her face and her arm in a sling.

Why he might not be annoying:

Despite his off field troubles, he was considered one of the most gifted players of his day.
He endeared himself to Brits when he burst into tears during the 1990 World Cup semi-finals after drawing a yellow card that would have banned him from the finals. (England lost the semis to Germany making the penalty moot.)
He donated 10,000 pounds to bail out Gateshead Town, his hometown soccer club.
