Attorney

The Resume

    (January 22, 1980- )
    Born in Dorchester, Boston, Massachusetts
    Birth name was Marilyn James
    Lawyer
Served as Assistant State's Attorney for <14222 Baltimore, Maryland (2005-12)
Litigator for Liberty Mutual Insurance (2012-13)
Elected Baltimore City's State Attorney in 2014, assumed office on January 8th 2015
Filed 26 charges, including second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter, against six police officers in the death of unarmed black teenager, Freddie Gray (May 1, 2015)

Why she might be annoying:

She was a plaintiff on a Judge Judy episode (2000).
She was a 'guest ringleader' at the Universal Circus' Baltimore stop.
She is the wife of a Baltimore City Councilman, leading many to question her objectivity.
The Right accused her of being a racially motivated litigator.
She refused to file charges against the captured looters at the height of the Baltimore riots.
Her ruling announcement arguably abetted the drastic rise in crime in inner city black neighborhoods, rather than easing the racial tension or achieving 'crowd control.'
Case in point, Baltimore arrests dropped by over half while homicides saw a major spike, after the announcement.
She filed a gag motion to withhold the release of Freddie Gray's autopsy photos, but was denied after she filed in the wrong court (June 5, 2015).
A tense exchange between her and a Fox News reporter went viral after she chafed at the question as to whether she supported Baltimore's police force (June 10, 2015).
Even critics who were less overtly hostile towards her questioned whether she wasn't 'in over her head' and suggested she be recused and replaced with an appointed Special Prosecutor.
She rejected calls for a Special Prosecutor, but came off as a hypocrite when footage surfaced of her at a panel calling for a Special Prosecutor to be appointed in the Michael Brown/Ferguson case and also implying that there was racial bias in the investigation.
Her Probable Cause Affidavit presented was derided as being full of holes, with misleading information and manipulation of facts (such as charging the driver of the transport van with murder).

Why she might not be annoying:

She was raised by a single mother in inner city Boston.
She comes from a long line of police officers (her mother, father, grandfather, and several uncles).
Her grandfather was also one of the first black police officers in the state of Massachusetts.
She lost her 17-year old cousin to inner city gun violence, after he was mistaken for a drug dealer.
At the time of her election, she became the youngest District Attorney in Baltimore history.
At the age of 35, she is also the youngest chief prosecutor in the United States, as of 2015.
She was named one of Maryland Daily Record’s 2013 Leading Women.
She was ranked in Baltimore Magazine’s 40 Under 40 (2013).
She was ranked in The Baltimore Sun’s 50 Women to Watch listing (2014).
She was enthusiastically praised by Freddie Gray's family.
Her decision to press charges against the officers involved in the death of Freddie Gray was greeted with relief by many, breaking the pattern of state attorneys choosing not to do so in similar cases.
