Official title is 'President of the Syrian Arab Republic'
Why he might be annoying
The minimum age for the Syrian presidency was changed from 40 to 34 so that Al-Assad could become president.
He was not interested succeeding his father and only became president because his brother Basil was killed in a car crash.
He looks like Hitler.
Syria remains a one-party dictatorship under his rule.
He may have aided Iraq in the Second Persian Gulf War.
He is an inexperienced leader.
Like Saddam Hussein, he subscribes to the ideologies of the Ba'ath Party.
He is accused of giving safe haven to terrorist fighting the coalition.
Why he might not be annoying
When several Syrian citizens wrote him letters asking for reforms, he allowed the letters to be published and did not conduct reprisals on the authors.
His friends describe him as being meek and awkward but friendly and a good listener.
He was involved in bringing computers, cell phones and the internet to Syria.
He referred to Saddam Hussein as a 'beast' during a visit to Kuwait.
He is a qualified eye doctor.
Generally, he is regarded as being more moderate than his father.
