    Appeared in the films 'Things to Come' (1936), 'Perfect Strangers' (1945), 'The Seventh Veil' (1945), 'The Paradine Case' (1947), 'Madeleine' (1950), 'The Sound Barrier' (1952), 'Taste of Fear' (1961), 'The Human Factor' (1979) and 'Maelstrom' (1985)
    Wrote the autobiography 'The Eighth Veil'

    She was married and divorced three times.
    Her second and third husbands, Nigel Tangye and David Lean, were first cousins.
    She said, 'I am too shy to be a typical actress. I hate curtain calls and it embarrasses me when people clap.'

Why she might not be annoying:

    She was nicknamed 'the pocket Garbo.'
    She became the first British actress to sign a million dollar contract -- $880,000 of which was swallowed up by taxes (1946).
    After her film career cooled down, she became a producer and director of travelogues.
