Best known for the opera 'Hansel und Gretel' (1893)
Also composed 'Die Konigskinder' ('The King's Children,' 1897), 'Domroschen' ('Sleeping Beauty,' 1902), 'Heirat wider Willen' ('The Reluctant Marriage,' 1905), 'Bubchens Weihnachtstraum' ('The Christmas Dream,' 1906) and 'Gaudeamus' (1919)

Why he might be annoying:

His parents opposed his musical career.
He applied for a post as director of the New South Wales Conservatorium of Music in Australia (1914), but the outbreak of World War I kept him from being accepted.
Except for 'Hansel und Gretel,' his works are rarely performed today.
His name was stolen by a lounge singer.

Why he might not be annoying:

He won the Frankfurt Mozart Prize (1876) and the first Mendelssohn Prize (1879).
He went partially deaf a year before his death.
He died a day after suffering a heart attack while watching the debut of his son, Wolfram, as director of Carl Maria von Weber's opera 'Der Freischutz.'
Richard Strauss called Hansel und Gretel 'a masterpiece of the highest quality... all of it original, new and so authentically German.'
