He resigned after only one year in office during his first tenure as Prime Minister.

He denies the abduction of ‘comfort women’ by Japanese troops in World War II.
Despite being incredibly unpopular among the Japanese people, he blamed his resignation on diarrhea.
He apologized to Hiroshima survivors after one of his cabinet members made a statement justifying the use of atomic bombs.
His minister of agriculture committed suicide as a result of a financial scandal.

He vowed to work for a world wide ban on nuclear arms.
He supports Japan's alliance with the U.S.
He was a chief negotiator on behalf of Japanese citizens kidnapped by North Korea.
He was shot and fatally wounded while campaigning for candidates in Japan's upcoming parliamentary elections (July 8, 2022).
