(December 20, 1965-July 14, 1967)
Originally on ABC (1965-1967)
Aired on Lifetime (February 20, 1990-1998)
Aired on PAX (2000-September 22, 2003)
Premise: Three teams compete in a series of games that take place within the confines of an unlucky grocery store
Lifetime/PAX version hosted by David Ruprecht (1990-2003)
Tagline is 'Every time you're at the checkout and you hear the beep, think of the fun you could be having on Supermarket Sweep!'
Why Supermarket Sweep might be annoying
It endorsed rabid and unthinking commercialism.
It was like a giant commercial for several hundreds of products.
The Lifetime host dyed his hair halfway through the series.
After the rampaging soccer moms get done with the store, it resembles Saigon in 1975.
Contestants were forced to wear god-awful collared sweatshirts.
It had infomercial production values, complete with cheesy SWOOSH effects.
Why Supermarket Sweep might not be annoying
Though it seemed like all the contestants sucked at playing it, there was no way to practice without getting a felony.
While not quite working on network television, it was a delightful guilty pleasure on cable.
The contestants seemed to live in a magical place where there was no such thing as sadness, even if they lost the game.
It was lovely seeing such heated cart-racing for what was usually just a $5,000 prize.
It endorsed the American dream of grabbing crap until your capitalist heart is content.
