The Resume

    (March 13, 1930-January 13, 2018)
    Born in South Gate, California
Birth name was Harold Douglas Harvey
    National League Umpire (1962-92)
    Umpired in 4,673 games
Umpired in five World Series, seven All-Star Games, and nine National League Championship Series
Nicknamed ‘God’ for his thorough knowledge of the rulebook and authoritative bearing
Ninth umpire inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame (2010)

Why he might be annoying:

He addressed everyone as ‘son,’ regardless of age.
Bad knees forced him to end his umpiring career three years before reaching his goal of age 65.
He subtitled his memoirs ‘The Best Umpire Who Ever Lived.’
He developed throat cancer from his heavy use of chewing tobacco.

Why he might not be annoying:

He lived by three rules: never take anything from a player, never back down from a call, and never carry a grudge.
In a 1974 poll of players, he was the only NL umpire rated ‘excellent.’
He was frequently the voice for MLB’s ‘You Make the Call’ segments.
Joe Torre -- the first player he ejected from a game – said, ‘You’d get mad at Harvey and he’d never get mad back. Even arguing with him, I’ve never seen him hot.’
Joe Morgan said, ‘Doug Harvey was the model every umpire should strive to be. He was tolerant to a point, yet the players always knew he was in control.’
